Description
The riverbed of Sabarmati in the Indian city of Ahmedabad progressively dries out after the monsoon season, mainly due to the tapping of its waters for agricultural use. Within the scope of the project, the urban areas along both shores of the river were examined in order to find alternative solutions that could deal naturally with the receding shoreline, without resorting to artificial measures.
The project aims at alternative solutions which would restructure the riverbed as an effectual and living part of the existing urban area, while also enhancing the image of the city. On both riverfronts, currently under pressure from heavy commercial development, there are urban institutions and the old city center with its market places.
The measures depicted in the project reveal a new network of green spaces, open spaces, paths, river and outlet structures, water canals, as well as supply facilities. The slum areas around the river are to be revitalized. They are viewed as a new and dynamic resource for the city.
The dried out riverbed is available for use by the inhabitants, as a source of micro-economic activities such as a sand quarry, agriculture, and/or market place.
